Khushi is 6 years old and lives with her mother, Fulmaya. Her mother was an orphan and was married when she was only 16 years old. Although she dreamed that her life would improve after marriage, sadly, it became worse. Khushi’s father was disappointed when she was born; he had hoped for a son and abandoned Fulmaya and little Khushi. For the past three years, there has been no word from Khushi’s father.

As an orphan, Fulmaya couldn’t turn to her own family for support, so she sought help from her estranged husband’s parents. The parents subjected Fulmaya to daily torture simply because she gave birth to a daughter. Unable to bear the living situation, and concerned for Khushi’s safety, Fulmaya moved in with another relative. Again, her hopes that life would improve were in vain. The relatives made Khushi’s mother work 12 hours a day in exchange for the food and shelter they provided.

Khushi’s mother says, “There is no law in our country to protect women like me. I am in desperate need of some support but there is no one to help me without expecting a great deal in return.” She hopes her daughter will become a lawyer so she can help people fight for justice.
